1. Web Hosting and Domain Setup

  • Choose a reliable and secure web hosting provider – hosting is where your website will “Live” or be housed on the internet.
  • Register a domain name that represents your business – this is registering the www. domain of your choice.
  • Set up domain nameservers and connect them to your hosting – this is after your site is ready to go live and can be done by a tech expert as it can be quite a tricky setup for a newbie.
  • Install an SSL certificate for enhanced website security – another essential item and some hosts provide these for free.

A note about Hosting and domain setup: Please be warned, they’re definitely NOT all the same. Please do your research and speak to an expert (like me) who cares about the performance and future of your website. Good hosting is essential to a successful website.

My recommendations (Yes, they’re affiliate links, but I only recommend what I like and use)

2. Business Email Setup

  • Create a professional email address with your domain name – I really do recommend going directly through the big names like Microsoft 365 Business or Google. If you buy these services cheaper, through a third party, you can end up with issues down the track.
  • Set up email accounts for different team members, if applicable
  • Integrate email forwarding to manage emails efficiently
  • Choose a user-friendly email client for easy access

3. Website Performance Optimisation

  • Install caching plugins to improve website loading speed
  • Compress images to reduce file sizes without compromising quality
  • Minimize HTTP requests for a faster and smoother user experience
  • Regularly update and optimise website plugins for better performance

4. Security and Backup Solutions

  • Install a reliable security plugin to protect your website from threats
  • Set up regular automatic backups to safeguard your website data – include an off-site backup
  • Enable two-factor authentication for enhanced login security
  • Keep WordPress core and plugins up-to-date to prevent vulnerabilities

5. Mobile Responsiveness and Cross-Browser Compatibility

  • Ensure your website is fully responsive on all devices – remember, most people use phones these days
  • Test your website across different browsers for consistent performance
  • Optimise images and content for mobile viewing
  • Implement mobile-friendly navigation and touch-friendly elements
